Position Overview
The Process Technician – Injection Moulding is responsible for the setup, operation, troubleshooting, and optimization of thermoset injection molding presses to ensure consistent production of high-quality parts. This role requires advanced knowledge of injection molding processes, strong mechanical aptitude, and the ability to make precise machine adjustments. The technician will support mold changes, equipment maintenance, operator training, and continuous improvement initiatives to maintain a safe, efficient, and high-performing manufacturing environment.
Key Responsibilities
Mold Setup & Installation
• Install and remove injection molds using a forklift with boom or crane.
• Align molds with locating rings and secure with clamps.
• Connect heaters, thermocouples, and cooling lines as required.
• Replace faulty heaters and ensure proper function before production.
Machine & Process Setup
• Configure press parameters including temperature, clamp pressure, screw speed, stuffer speed and pressure, back pressure, timers, and cycle times.
• Prepare work area with required tables, gauges, fixtures, and materials.
• Pull and stage raw materials from storage (including cooler, if applicable).
• Document setup parameters and maintain accurate process sheets for repeatability.
Production & Quality
• Start up jobs and submit samples to Quality Control for approval.
• Maintain part quality and consistency throughout production runs.
• Troubleshoot issues such as voids, gas burns, short shots, or flashing.
• Monitor cycle times and optimize processes for efficiency and minimal scrap.
• Perform in-process inspections and collaborate with QC on corrective actions.
Maintenance & Continuous Improvement
• Maintain mold cleanliness and functionality during runs.
• Monitor machine operation and perform startups and shutdowns as scheduled.
• Support preventive maintenance of presses and auxiliary equipment (dryers, loaders, chillers, etc.).
• Participate in root cause analysis and implement corrective/preventive actions for recurring issues.
• Recommend tooling or process improvements to reduce downtime, scrap, and rework.
Collaboration & Training
• Train and guide press operators on proper techniques and job-specific requirements.
• Assist in training new Process Technicians.
• Work closely with Engineering on new mold trials, process validations, and first article runs.
• Communication process changes clearly to operators, supervisors, and engineers.
Safety & Compliance
• Follow OSHA and company safety policies during mold changes and machine operation.
• Identify and report potential hazards immediately.
• Maintain proper documentation for machine adjustments, quality checks, and material usage.
